Take 5 with Handsdown

Welcome to our 'Take 5' interview series! A series of short and quick 5-question interview pieces that won't require more than 5 minutes of your time. Pretty damn simple hey? Well, let's get to it.

Today, we're catching up with the brother Handsdown. Known for his chunky, psychedelic minimal techno sets and deep musical roots within the Melbourne music scene, Handsdown is a name that resonates within the community and on the dfloor. Let's dive into his world at the moment, as of late and find out what's brewing for him for the future.

1. This weekend, you're set to light up Strawberry Fields Festival. Can you give us a sneak peek into what your set will entail and some highlight acts you're excited to see perform?"

Absolutely gassed for Strawberry! In terms of my set being Sunday afternoon after my father Doppel, I'm going to get things going quite cybertronic, with some chunky rock and roll with a proggy 360 mctwist. You feel me?

SF is such a special weekend of the calendar - it's one of the first major bush parties I played so I've had so many incredible moments in the Wildlands.  Super pumped to see Ezra Collective, Pretty Girl, Muska Jen and Acid Pauli - but to be honest Strawbs is one of those festivals where you discover artists too so you'll see me floating around all the stage across the weekend.

2. From your upcoming Brazil tour and performance at Universo Paralello to Elements and the Australian summer festival circuit, it seems like you've got a pretty sweet journey ahead. What are you most excited about in your touring and production calendar?

Yeah! Obviously returning to Brazil to play on the mighty UpClub stage at Universo is a major one - it's been my dream for many years and I'm really excited to share my art that incredibly special place as well as some other shows around the country that will announce soon. Also pumped to be back at Elements with Leigh Boy in January - it's one of my favourite Aussie festivals for sure.

Release wise for HD&LB we have a remix for Boundless, Luis M and Fernanda Pistelli coming on Ibogatech and a remix for Kosheen - Catch - and I have my first solo EP in many years for Subios records cooking right now so expect plenty of new music!

3. Your involvement in some recent large scale events like Interstellar Groove + DARK have been phenomenal. Can you share how these experiences have shaped your approach to music and performance?

I've worked in events and running parties since the beginning of my music career - and the last few years I've moved into more serious roles (interstellar groove festival, Dark Festival, Paradigm) working on more touring, artist service and logistics and honestly it's given me a great scope into being a touring artist and what that entails. For example how certain acts carry themselves pre and post show, as well as communications with agents and the like.

I feel like I've taken a lot of knowledge and inspiration from guys like Alex Stein, Mandragora and Liquid Soul - who remain very humble, easy to work with and are great performers - I hope to take that same mantra into my own music career the more I travel the world.

4. Lately, you've been focusing on health, fitness, and mindfulness. How has this personal journey impacted your music and your life as an artist?

Honestly it's changed my life! Years of partying and playing music really took its toll on my body - so over the few years

I've been able to transform my body and mind to a place where I am confident, driven and healthy - and that's a damn good place to be!

5. If you could travel back in time, what one piece of advice would you give your younger self about navigating the world of music and life?

First and foremost id say to be kind and love yourself! Never stop dreaming and don't stop workin' 🤘🏽

Catch Handsdown on the Deep Jungle stage this Sunday afternoon from 4pm sandwiched in-between Sam Shure, Doppel & Eli Fur. It's been a while between dances on the mighty river. Have a safe and happy week ahead y'all! Peace x
